The working group of town guides for Münstermaifeld
invites you to a short hike and tour
The Jewish cemetery near Mertloch
Until 1868, the Jews of Münstermaifeld, Polch, Mertloch, Wierschem, Pillig, Gappenach and Naunheim buried their dead in the Eltz Forest. In April 1868, a suitable plot of land for a new cemetery was acquired in the district of Mertloch. In 1894, a charitable association was founded, whose statutes primarily regulated the accompaniment of the deceased. Every member was obliged to attend the funeral of a fellow believer. In the event of an unexcused absence, 50 pfennigs had to be paid. Contemporary witnesses remember that in the post-war period the gravestones were wildly jumbled up. When and by whom the cemetery was desecrated could not be clarified.
